Crete Eclipse 2006:
Posted Wednesday, March 29, 2006:
The eclipse at it's apex, through a Coronado telescope
Snaps of the 85 percent solar eclipse through a $700 solar filter
Solar eclipse=very cool
It wasn't a total eclipse, but the 85 percent of the sun briefly blocked out by moon today at lunchtime was enough to generate 'oohs' and 'aahs' from the crowd of people watching through two telescopes near my place of employment here on the Akrotiri Peninsula of western Crete. All but one of the photos were shot through a co-worker's H-Alpha filter unit, via an energy rejection filter mounted on a Coronado telescope.

The two filters combined to allow a narrow wavelength of the 'red' light through to the eyepiece. If you look closely, you can see little solar flares (from our perspective) on the surface of the sun. This first photo was shot with a high quality Nikon™ D1H. The rest of the shots were taken with a Sony™ Cybershot.

A close-up of the Cretan solar eclipse
Please move, you're blocking the sun : I kept expecting giant blobs of melted blue cheese to begin raining down on us. I even bought crackers.
